If you’re looking for halal food in Shanghai, you know the challenge. Finding a restaurant that is genuinely halal – not just “muslim-friendly” or “pork-free” – takes time, trust, and often a lot of phone calls.

We have good news.

At KAPYA Turkish Restaurant, our entire menu is 100% halal. From our charcoal-grilled kebabs to our slow-cooked lamb shank, from our creamy hummus to our freshly baked bread – every dish meets halal standards.

Here’s everything you need to know.

100% halal Turkish food spread at KAPYA restaurant in Shanghai – charcoal kebabs, lamb shank, meze, and ayran

What Does Halal Mean?

Halal is an Arabic word meaning “permissible” or “lawful.” In the context of food, it refers to dietary standards prescribed by Islamic law.

For meat to be halal:

  • The animal must be healthy at the time of slaughter
  • The slaughter must be performed by a Muslim who recites a prayer
  • The blood must be fully drained from the veins
  • The animal must not come into contact with non-halal substances

Halal also prohibits:

  • Pork and pork by-products
  • Alcohol intoxicants (though we serve rakı and wine, our food preparation remains halal)
  • Meat from animals not slaughtered according to Islamic law

At KAPYA, we take these standards seriously. Our suppliers are carefully vetted. Our kitchen follows strict separation protocols. And our team understands the importance of halal integrity.

Is All Turkish Food Halal?

Not automatically. While Turkey is a majority-Muslim country and many Turkish restaurants follow halal practices, it’s not universal – especially outside Turkey.

However, Turkish cuisine is naturally halal-friendly. Lamb, beef, chicken, and seafood are the primary proteins. Meze are often vegetarian. Dairy is widely used. And the cooking methods (grilling, slow-cooking, baking) align perfectly with halal principles.

At KAPYA, we’ve made sure that every single dish on our menu meets halal standards. No exceptions.
