Turkish food in Shanghai is having a moment.

More people than ever are discovering the rich flavors of Turkish cuisine – the smoky char of charcoal-grilled kebabs, the creamy comfort of hummus, the bold spice of Adana, the sweet layers of baklava. From casual wraps to leisurely feasts, Turkish food has found a home in this city.

And at the heart of this growing scene? A small, personal restaurant on Wuding Lu called KAPYA.

What Makes KAPYA Part of This Story

When founder Ugur first arrived in Shanghai in 2008, Turkish food was still a niche. Over 18 years, he watched the city evolve – and he dreamed of sharing his homeland’s flavors with the people of Shanghai.

In 2025, he opened KAPYA.

“I don’t want people to think this is just a place for exotic food. I want them to step inside and feel Turkish culture.”

Today, KAPYA stands as a small window to Turkey – a place where diners can slow down, enjoy authentic flavors, and experience the warmth of Turkish hospitality.

Why Diners Are Choosing KAPYA

1. Founder-Led Hospitality

At KAPYA, the owner isn’t just a name on the menu. Ugur is on the floor every day, greeting guests, explaining dishes, and making sure everyone feels welcome. He patiently guides first-time visitors through the menu, recommends dishes based on their taste, and shares stories about Turkey and its culture.

This isn’t standard service. It’s Turkish hospitality – warm, personal, and genuine.

2. The Taste of Authenticity

We don’t chase trends. We don’t adapt our recipes to fit local palates. We serve original taste – the same flavors you’d find in a family kitchen in Istanbul, Ankara, or Mersin.

Our charcoal grill is the heart of our kitchen. Real fire. Real smoke. Real flavor. No shortcuts, no gas, no compromises.

3. A Place to Slow Down

Shanghai is a fast city. Ugur knows this. That’s why he created KAPYA as a space to pause.

“Shanghai is too fast. I hope KAPYA can be a place where people slow down, enjoy a meal, chat, and experience a different culture.”

Whether you’re sharing meze with friends, enjoying a romantic dinner for two, or celebrating a special occasion, KAPYA is designed for unhurried enjoyment.

4. A Window to Turkey

The photos on our walls? Ugur took them himself during his travels in Turkey. The recipes? Passed down through generations. The stories? They come from 18 years of Shanghai experience and a lifetime of Turkish heritage.

KAPYA is not just a restaurant. It’s a small window to Turkey – right here in Jing’an.
